AOA Performance Competition

The AOA Performance Competition aims to encourage the learning of organ and striving for above-average organ playing. Entrants who do well in the Auckland regional competition are encouraged to go on to enter the national competition in the following year.

 

Performance Competition 2020

The Organ Performance Competition for 2020 was held on Saturday 5 September 2020 at St Matthew-in-the-City, Auckland.  Because of COVID-19 restrictions at the time, only essential people were allowed in the church, and the performances were live streamed on the AOA Facebook page.

Results for the Performance Competition 2020

Helen Lukman-Fox  - 1st Prize ($400)

Helen is a church musician who started on the piano and Yamaha electone. Completed Bachelor of Church Music in Singapore - studying under Dr Margaret Co Chen for 3 years, followed by a year of Keyboard Accompaniment under Miss Lanny Yap. Secured various vocal and academic scholarships. Finally back in the music world after 19 years hiatus.

Soomin Kim - Second Prize ($200)

Soomin Kim is in her fourth and final year studying towards a BMus/ BCom conjoint degree at the University of Auckland. Born in Korea, she started learning the piano at the age of six. She moved to New Zealand in 2013 and has now completed her piano study at the University. As part of her degree she was provided with the opportunity to study Early Keyboard including the harpsichord, clavichord and fortepiano, under Associate Professor James Tibbles. In July 2019, she started learning the organ and has continued since.

Jaime Taylor - Encouragement Prize ($50)

Jaime is 14 years old and in year 10 at Kings College, he began Organ lessons at Kings Prep School under Mr Bell in year 7. Jaime is currently working towards his Trinity Grade 7 Organ examination with his current teacher Paul Chan. Jaime also plays the Violin and the Piano. He is a member of the Kings Orchestra, String Orchestra and All the Kings Men Choir. Jaime won the 2019 NZ International Young Artists Festival - Mozart concerto competition and went on to perform in the Gala Concert with NZ Chamber Orchestra.
